‘Take Angel for a coffee or something, Wolf,’ Stephen advised his friend the next morning, as both men observed Angel’s face paling. On the dot of eleven o’clock, medical personnel had come to collect Stephen to take him down to the operating theatre.
‘Go for a walk in the park—anything. Just get her out of here for a few hours,’ he ordered, as Angel continued to cling to his hand.
‘Oh, but—’
‘Stephen is right, Angel,’ Wolf told her with kindly firmness as he reached out to touch her arm. ‘It will be several hours before Peter Soames can tell us anything, and we may as well spend those hours not hanging around here.’
Not that this private clinic wasn’t bright and airy, and the staff very attentive; Wolf just agreed with Stephen that it would do Angel no good to spend the waiting hours sitting here, fretting about the outcome of the operation.
He had been concerned by Angel’s appearance when she’d joined him in the breakfast room earlier this morning. The make-up she had applied had done nothing to hide the dark smudges under her eyes from what had obviously been a sleepless night. In fact, no amount of make-up could have hidden the strain in her face as she’d refused all offers of food and drunk only a cup of coffee instead.
It had been a warning to Wolf that, once again, he might have made a serious error of judgement where Angel’s feelings for Stephen were concerned.
And if that was the case, then he knew that some of his remarks to her during the last couple of days had been unnecessarily cruel.
Now, he maintained his hold on Angel’s arm as he turned to the older man. ‘We will both see you in a few hours, Stephen,’ he said sincerely, hoping that was true. Stephen and he had been friends for so long now that he couldn’t imagine the world without the other man’s larger-than-life presence in it.
Stephen’s eyes gleamed his appreciation. ‘You most certainly will.’ He shook the hand that Wolf held out to him before turning to hug Angel.
Angelica clung to Stephen now that the moment had come for him to go to Theatre. ‘I want you to know that I love you!’ she told him fervently, aware that it was the first time she had told him that, but knowing that she spoke the truth.
She hadn’t been sure what to expect when she had decided to seek Stephen out a year ago—hadn’t known what she would feel for him once they had met, or he for her. She had only known that he at least deserved to know that he had a daughter.
But his love for her, once he’d known who she was, had been instant—an outpouring that had been unconditional as he’d invited her totally into his life, allowing her to get to know him and encouraging her to love him in return.
That she could lose him without having told him how she felt was totally unacceptable to her.
‘I love you too, Angel,’ Stephen assured her emotionally.
